Attach multiple files

I have a custom object and need to attach multiple files in a field just like the attachments in standard objects. Any way this can be achieved?

I am also looking into this but for existing standard objects like user. An approach I thought of was to add a custom object called userdoc and add a file upload to it and make it a 1 to many with the user and see if I could attach many userdoc records to a single user. This is only concept stage at the moment but custom objects have far more field types available than standard objects do which is weird (and annoying)
