Smart Events using global object fields

I have a smart event that sends an email, and I need to use an email address that is in a custom field on the company object. The company object is a global object, so I would have thought that it I put in {!COMPANY.EMAIL_FIN_CON!} in the email recipient field. When I try, I get an error because I don't appear to be able to use the company object. It isn't available in the field lookup.
